Sony Xperia 1 launched in February 2019 and was launched in Black, Grey, Purple, White colors. It factors an IP68 rating for dust and water protection. The Xperia 1 is absolutely a premium alternative to its forerunners, but according to Sony, it is also a soft relaunch of the Xperia brand, hence the name. It is priced at around NGN 360,000
Display and Design
It’s also sighted at a more linear audience – while the 21:9 Xperia phones were aimed at those who love to watch movies on the go, and who enjoyed the widescreen experience. The Xperia 1 is precisely steered at movie-makers, with a specific movie creation app and range of settings for optimizing viewing. The device comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1644×3840 pixels. It has a glass body and an aluminum frame.
Sony’s purpose for making phones with 21:9 screens is to make them the best phone available for watching movies, which are typically 21:9, unlike TV shows, YouTube videos, and streaming platforms’ originals, which are all in several other dimensions. If you view movies on the Xperia 1, as with the Xperia 10 series, you will not get any black bars on the top or bottom.
The device houses the volume rockers on the right side of the phone as well as the power button, the fingerprint sensor, and a dedicated camera button. This button operates as a shutter button on a camera and is in a similar position, so you can hold the phone like you would a camera, and use the button to take a picture rather than pressing on the screen. At the top is the device is the SIM card slot and the microSD card slot. The bottom houses the speaker, a microphone, and a USB-C for charging and transferring files.
An Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor powers Sony Xperia 1. It comes with 6GB of RAM and 64/128GB of internal storage and supports storage expansion via microSD card up to 512GB. The smartphone 1 is a dual-SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM and Nano-SIM cards.
The Sony Xperia 1 runs on stock Android 9.0 which is powered by a 3,300mAh battery. The device supports wireless charging, as well as proprietary fast charging. If you’re going to be recording videos or watching a lot of movies, you would want your phone to last longe, but this smartphone battery life is not up to the task.
Sony has finally made the upgrade to three rear cameras setup, which most other premium phones already have at this point, but as with previous Sony handsets, the Sony Xperia 1 camera is just ‘good’ and does not touch ‘great.’ The Sony Xperia 1 packs a triple rear camera setup, hosting a 12MP primary camera; a second 12MP 2x optical zoom telephoto camera, and a third 12MP ultrawide camera. The rear camera setup has autofocus. Included is an 8MP front-facing selfie camera.
Connectivity options on the Sony Xperia 1 include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Bluetooth v5.00, NFC, USB Type-C, 3G, and 4G with active 4G on both SIM cards.
Sensors on the phone include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, compass/ magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and fingerprint sensor.
However, there’s one problem we feel is not balanced out in some way, and that’s the price tag. For such a high price tag you’d anticipate the most trailblazing, potentially iPhone-killing Android smartphone, and the Sony Xperia 1 just isn’t that.
