Founded in 1997, HTC began as an original manufacturer and original equipment manufacturer, designing and manufacturing laptop computers.
After initially making smartphones based mostly on Windows mobile, HTC later became a co-founding member of the Open Handset Alliance, a group of handset manufacturers and mobile network operators dedicated to the development of the Android operating system. HTC Dream (marketed by T-mobile in many countries as the T-mobile G1) was the first phone on the market to run Android.
Although initially successful as a smartphone vendor, competition came from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics, among others, reduced its market share, which just reached 7.2% by April 2015, and the company has experienced back-to-back net losses. By 2016, HTC began diversifying its business beyond smartphones having partnered with Valve to develop a virtual reality platform known as HTC Vive.
After its partnership with Google to produce its Pixel smartphone, the company sold about half of its design and research capacity as well as its non-exclusive rights to smartphone-related intellectual property to Google in 2017 for US$1.1 billion.
On the other hand, Valve Corporation, also known as Valve Software, is an American video game developer, publisher, and digital distribution company headquartered in Bellevue, Washington.
It is the developer of the software distribution platform Steam and the Half-life, Counter-Strike, Portal, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead, and Dota series.
Valve Corporation was founded in 1996 by former Microsoft employees Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington. Its first released product, the First-person shooter (FPS) Half-Life (1998) was a huge and commercial success, after which Mike Harrington left the company.
Steam was released by Valve in 2003 and accounted for roughly half of digital PC games sales by 2011.
In 2010, the company began developing hardware, such as the Steam Machine brand of gaming PCs and the HTC Vive and Valve Index virtual reality headsets. By 2012, Valve employed around 250 people and was reportedly worth over US$3 billion making it the most profitable company per employee in the United States. It uses a flat structure, whereby employees decide what to work on themselves.
The HTC Vive is a virtual reality headset, used to create immersive experiences that can help educate and even entertain consumers. The headset HTC Vive uses room-scale tracking technology, allowing the user to move in 3D space and use motion-tracked handheld controllers to interact with the immediate environment.
The complete gadget set for the HTC Vive was revealed during the HTCs Mobile World Congress keynote in March 2015. Development kits were distributed between August and September 2015, and the first consumer version of the device was unveiled in April. Preorders started on the 29th of February 2016 at about 10am.
HTC Vive Controller Charge Time Plus Complete Spec
There are so many features that make the HTC Vive really unique, such as the Vive controller charge time which we’ll be discussing later in the post. We can describe the HTC Vive features by breaking down its various components:
- Vive controllers
- Vive tracker
- Vive headset
- Vive deluxe audio strap
- Vive wireless adapter
- Valve index controllers
#1: Vive Controllers
This’s a very important section where we’ll be discussing more on the Vive controller charge time.
The controllers for the HTC Vive have multiple input methods that include a track pad, grip buttons, and a dual stage trigger, and a use per charge of about 6 hours. Across this same ring of the controllers are 24 infrared sensors that detect the base stations to determine the possible location of the controller. The Steam VR Tracking system used can track the controller’s location to a fraction of a millimeter.

The HTC Vive controller charge time takes about 2 hours for a full charge. And note, this HTC Vive controller charge time applies also to the HTC hand controller charge time.
The HTC Vive controller charge time also influences the number of times the controller should be charged daily in the sense that, it takes the controller a maximum of 8 hours to discharge while in use when completely charged.
#2: Vive Tracker
A motion tracking system that is designed to be attached to physical accessories and controllers so that they can be tracked via the Lighthouse system.
Vive Trackers has a connector that can be used to communicate with the accessory It’s attached to.
#3: Vive Base Stations
Also known as the Lighthouse tracking system, the Vive base stations are two black boxes that create a 360-degree virtual space. The base stations releases tied infrared pulses at 60 pulses per second that are then picked up by the headset and controllers with sub-millimeter precision.
#4: Vive Headset
The Vive headset has a refresh rate of 90Hz and a 110-degree field of view.
The device uses two OLED panels, one per eye, each having a display resolution of 1080×1200 (2160×1200 combined pixels). Safety features of the headset include a front-facing camera that allows the user to observe their surroundings without taking off the headset.
The device can also use the camera to detect any moving or static objects in the room; this functionality that is used as part of a “Chaperone” safety system will automatically create a virtual wall or a feed from the camera to safely guide users from obstacles or real-world walls.
#5: Vive Deluxe Audio Strap
HTC dispatched the Deluxe Audio Strap. It added integrated over-ear headphones as well as improving the HMD’s comfort through better weight distribution.
#6: Vive Wireless Adapter
The Vive Wireless Adapter was launched as an accessory in September 2018 for the original Vive and Vive Pro. It allows it to connect the Headset with the computer wirelessly.
#7: Valve Index Controllers
Vive also makes use of the Value Index controllers developed by Valve.
The Vive at first, required computers running Microsoft Windows. In February 2017, support was added for the Linux OS, and MacOS support was followed in June 2017.
