It can get really frustrating watching a show that wasn’t translated to the language of your understanding, and that’s where video subtitling comes in.
Video subtitles are there to enable you to understand the show you are watching, irrespective of the language being used. And in today’s guide, I’m going to show you how to change the subtitles and languages of your videos on Hulu.

How to Change Subtitles and Language on Hulu on a Desktop Browser
If its Mac or a personal computer, it is most likely that you are using Chrome browser to watch Hulu. When a subtitle is available, to change the language of the subtitle on Hulu.com, follow the steps below:
#1: Open your browser on your desktop computer and go to the Hulu website.
#2: Log into your Hulu account and start playing the movie, show or episode you would like to watch
#3: Move the mouse cursor to the bottom left. Once this is done, the playback controls will open. Click on the gear icon to show the playback settings.
#4: Click on Subtitles and Audio options in the menu to add subtitles or change the default language to any other language available.
How to Change Subtitles and Languages on Hulu on Mobile
Whether you are using an iPhone or Android mobile device to watch videos on Hulu, changing the language can be done really easy and with the following steps:
#1: On your Android, tablet, iPhone, or iPad, open Hulu and start watching the movie, episode or show you would like to watch
#2: To see the gear icon located at the top right corner, tap on the device screen
#3: To change the default language to another language that’s available click on the Subtitles or audio options.
How to Change Subtitles and Languages on Hulu on Xbox
If it is Xbox Entertainment you are using, here is how to change Hulu language and subtitle.
- Pull up the playback controls by pressing the Up button or swiping down on the remote
- Look for the gear icon located at the bottom left of the playing bar, press it or just swipe up
- As the settings are opened, the choices for captions and subtitles for the movie, show or episode you are currently watching will be display
- Now choose the language you prefer.
Note that the above steps set the language and subtitle for all shows, movies and episode you will watch.
How to Change your Hulu Language and Subtitle on PS4
PS4 has a similar feature to that of Xbox in the sense that it supports the latest versions of the Hulu app. Below are steps on how to change the language and subtitle on Hulu for Xbox users:
- Pull up the playback controls by pressing the Up button or swiping down on the remote
- Look for the gear icon located at the bottom left of the screen and open it
- Once the settings (gear icon) have been opened, the choices for Captions and Subtitles will be displayed for what you are watching.
- Choose the available language for the subtitle
Note that similarly with Xbox, on PS4, the Hulu app will save your language and subtitle settings for all shows, movies and episode. Therefore, you don’t need to always change the language of the subtitle every time you watch a new show or movie.
How to Change Your Hulu Language and Subtitle on Firestick
One really great way to enjoy Hulu is to use a Fire TV stick and it won’t be nice to understand the show you are watching if you do not understand the language being used in it.
Below are steps on how to change the language and subtitle on Hulu for Fire TV stick users:
- On your remote, swipe down to display the playback bar
- To open the settings menu, swipe up or press
- The Settings will display choices for Captions and subtitles for the movie or show you are currently watching
- To select the language for the subtitle, press On
Your language preference will be saved for all shows, movies and episode.
How to Change Your Hulu Language and Subtitle on Roku
Below are steps on how to change the language and subtitle on Hulu for Roku users:
- On your remote, swipe down to display the playback bar
- To open the settings menu, swipe up or press
- The Settings will display choices for Captions and subtitles for the movie or show you are currently watching
- To select the language for the subtitle, press On

How to Change Your Hulu Language and Subtitle on Apple TV
The Apple TV has several versions and therefore changing the language and subtitle of Hulu will be different and it will depend on the model of the Apple TV you are using.
For those using 3rd generation and earlier models of Apple TV, below are steps on how to change the language and subtitle on Hulu.
- Press the up button on the Apple TV remote and pull up the playback bar while the Hulu show is playing
- To see more settings, press the up button of the Apple TV remote
- Look for captions and select among the available languages for the subtitle.
For those using 4th generation and newer models of Apple TV, below are steps on how to change the language and subtitle on Hulu.
- While the show is playing, swipe down on the remote to pull up the playback bar.
- Press or swipe up to open the settings menu
- In the Captions and Subtitles category, press on and set your language preference for your subtitles.
Hulu will save your language preference settings on your profile so you don’t keep to change the language of the subtitle for the next movie or show you will watch on Hulu.
