Late last year, BlackBerry Mobile launched its first self-styled BlackBerry running Android and it was called the KeyOne. This caused so much excitement among die-hard BlackBerry fans and those who left BlackBerry for Android or iPhone some years ago but still felt something for them.
Undoubtedly, the KeyOne was a success. Although it was never going to compete in sales with the likes of Apple or Samsung.
BlackBerry promised a follow-up to 2017’s KeyOne, and BlackBerry has confirmed in a tweet that the official name is BlackBerry Key2. And it will be released on the 7th of June this year.
The BlackBerry Key2 boasts of some new features like a dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz). And it will come with Android (8.1) Oreo out of the box. Also, its model number is listed as BBF100-6.
Let me take you through the expected features of this Smartphone in segments.
Design and Display
The BlackBerry Key2 sports an aluminum frame with a plastic back. This device has a dimension of 151.4 x 71.8 x 8.5 mm (5.96 x 2.83 x 0.33 in) and weighs only 168g. Hence, you won’t have to worry about the phone being heavy.
I’ve learned that this device is going to have a physical keyboard, and this restricts the display somehow.
There’s a 4.5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, with 16M colors. With a resolution of 1080 x 1620 pixels, it has a 3:2 aspect ratio at (~433 ppi density).
The screen of the BlackBerry Key2 has Multitouch features and is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass v4 material.
The Key2 comes in two variants, a Single SIM (Nano-SIM) or Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by) in India only. They both sport a Capacitive touch 4-row BlackBerry keyboard.
Hardware and Software
Powering the BlackBerry Key2 is a Qualcomm SDM660 Snapdragon 660 chipset atop an Android 8.1 (Oreo) operating system.
Furthermore, there’s an Octa-core (4×2.2 GHz Kryo 260 & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 260) CPU, and also an Adreno 512 GPU for graphics handling.
In addition, the Key2 comes with 6Gb of RAM and 64Gb of inbuilt memory. Which can be expanded to 256Gb, with the use of a microSD card.
The sensors include Fingerprint (front-mounted), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and compass.
Camera and Battery
The camera on the Key2 looks promising. There’s a Dual: 12 MP (f/1.8, 1/2.3″, 1.55µm) + 8 MP rear camera, with phase detection autofocus, dual-LED dual-tone flash.
Other Features of this camera include Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, and panorama.
Upfront, there’s an 8 MP (f/2.0, 1.12µm) Camera that promises a lot for selfie folks out there.
Battery-wise, the BlackBerry Key2 comes with a non-removable Li-Ion 3360 mAh battery. Also, they included a Quick Charge 3.0 ability. Which gives Fast battery charging at 50% in 36 min.
The Price of the BlackBerry Key2 isn’t certain. I’ll definitely update this page as soon as it launches.
